Back to School Program

Low Income People Involvement of Nipissing (LIPI) Back to School Programming assists families in need by providing their children with essential supplies for the school year.

Some children are fortunate to have all they require for the school year, however, others are anxious and overwhelmed with stress due to school expenses their family cannot address. All children are entitled to fulfill their dreams and pursue their ambitions. LIPI’s Back to School Program may provide families with all the needed essentials including uniforms.

The following information must accompany all applications for these services:

  • Bank Statement for the past 60 days
  • Proof of Custody
  • Proof of Income
  • Proof of Residency
  • Child’s grade
  • Child’s size (Uniforms)

All requests remain confidential.

Donations and contributions are most welcome. The Back to School Program’s success is possible thanks to the continued generosity of local individuals and businesses.

Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP)

The Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) will reduce the electricity bills of low-income customers.

1. Do I Qualify?

If you are a customer of an electric utility and in a lower income home, you may qualify for a reduction on your electricity bill through the OESP. It’s also available to customers of unit sub-meter providers and retail energy companies.

You must apply to the program.

2. What Support Could I Receive?

The OESP will reduce the cost of your household electricity by applying a monthly credit directly to your bill.

The amount of the credit depends on two factors:

  • how many people live in the home and
  • your combined household income.

For example, a home with 4 people and an annual income of $37,000 will receive an on-bill credit of $34 each month.

OESP credit amounts

LEVEL OF HOUSEHOLD INCOME ($) NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING IN HOME
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Less than 28,000 $30 $30 $34 $38 $42 $50 $50
28,001 – 39,000 $30 $34 $38 $42 $50
39,001 – 48,000 $30 $34 $38
48,001 – 52,000 $30

If your home is electrically heated, or you rely on medical devices requiring a lot of power, OESP offers a higher level of assistance. First Nations and Métis will also qualify for a higher level of assistance.

3. How Do I Apply?

  1. Gather up the following:
    • Your electricity bill
    • Names and birthdates of all the residents in your home as registered with the Canada Revenue Agency
    • Social Insurance Numbers (SINs), Individual Tax Numbers or temporary taxation numbers for residents over the age of 16.
  2. Visit our location 127 Main St. East, North Bay, ON, P1B 1A9
  3. We will print the application. You fill and sign the consent forms and we do the rest.

You will be notified of eligibility after your application and signed consent form have been reviewed.

If eligible, the credit will appear directly on your electricity bill in about 6 to 8 weeks from the date of approval. You will receive OESP for 2 years before having to reapply.

Note: If you have not filed an income tax return recently, or if your situation has changed since you last filed, you can apply for OESP through a local intake agency. You will need to bring all of the documents listed in Step 1 above, plus proof of your household income.

2016 Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

Drop in your 2016 taxes starting March 8th

In collaboration with the United Way, LIPI offers the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). This program helps prepare income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation. It begins in mid-March, and is run by volunteers.

Are you eligible for help?

You may be eligible if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Modest income

Your total family income should be less than the amount shown in the chart. Check with your community organization as some organizations have different requirements.

Chart: suggested income level

Family size Total family income
One person $30,000
One person with one dependant $35,000 (add $2,500 for each additional dependant)
Couple $40,000 (add $2,500 for each dependant)

Simple tax situation

In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from these sources:

  • employment
  • pension
  • benefits such as CPP, disability, CCB, EI, social assistance
  • RRSP
  • support payments
  • scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants
  • interest (under $1,000)

Your tax situation is not simple if you:

  • are self-employed or have employment expenses
  • have business or rental income and expenses
  • have capital gains or losses
  • file for bankruptcy
  • are completing a tax return for a deceased person
